Chris Arterberry repaid his parents for their support by funding an IU scholarship
“You can never pay your parents back,” says Chris Arterberry (BS’98 and MS’02). At age 29, Chris took a different approach to repaying his parents for all the help in his life: He set things up to help the next generation.
Chris started giving early, so he can watch the benefits of his gift grow during his lifetime. With an annual cash gift, he created a scholarship in honor of his parents for their support of him during his BS and MS degrees.
“In a sense,” he remarks, “my parents ‘paid it forward.’ Now it’s my turn.”
Beginning in the spring of 2006, the scholarship will be awarded a year at a time to assist with tuition and fees for the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (HPER) majors who also work in the Division of Recreational Sports. Chris received his BS in Kinesiology followed by a MS in Exercise Physiology from HPER at IUB. Now an associate director of fitness and wellness at DePaul University, Chris understands the challenges that face college students today.
Currently, his folks work for Bristol-Meyers-Squibb in Evansville. “I contacted HPER development and worked out the details,” says Chris. “I was thinking about something to do for my parents, a way to help out the school, how to help students. It occurred to me that I could do all of that, all at once.”
