A new home holds new promise. So, imagine if you were to give the Hutton Honors College scholars a new home with space enough for academic programs and cozy nooks to study in. You would be opening doors to even more vital interactions between deserving students and accomplished faculty in the pursuit of unique and independent undergraduate studies. In addition, you would be supporting these talented students as they learn about the world through travel.
In short, you would do what Ed Hutton has been doing for a long time.
Through his ongoing generosity, this businessman and philanthropist is fulfilling his vision of a cadre of globally educated Indiana University students with promise of achieving great things on the world stage. "I measure people by how much good they do for the world," Ed says. "I am proud of the dollars I have given to the Hutton Honors College. That money exists to do a lot of good."
In 2003, Ed established an endowment for IU’s International Experiences Program. This gift has enabled some of the most talented students who pass through the Sample Gates to study abroad.
Since that time, whether it has been through providing medical supplies to rural Hondurans or studying Chinese film in Beijing, HHC scholars have returned to IU with new perspectives, fresh ideas, and eye-opening experiences that will help them compete successfully in the international marketplace.
But after all that traveling, you have to come home again. Ed’s most recent gift to the HHC, the new residence, will be located at Seventh and Woodlawn, opposite Dunn Meadow and the Indiana Memorial Union. The gothic, limestone building will offer these now and future leaders a better environment for coming to grips with their extraordinary experiences. "Honors students will truly be able to feel that HHC is their home away from home," says HHC Dean Karen Hanson. "We are absolutely elated about the prospects for this new building.
As Ed Hutton knows better than anyone, "Given the right opportunity and tools, young people will work wonders."
